Brief

Thesis:
Illegal immigrants should not be willingly allowed to take over America, and, therefore, take over the American Dreams of legal American citizens.

Audience:
My argument is pointed towards legal American citizens, who may believe that something needs to be done regarding illegal immigration. My argument will fully convince them that it is wrong for illegal immigrants to be in America, using our tax dollars for their crimes. Yes, America was built on immigration, but not on illegals crossing the border and illegally obtaining money and jobs, therefore prospering off true American citizen’s dreams.

Reasons/Evidence:
1. America should enforce the immigration laws that are already in place to keep this problem under better control. That way, Americans will be able to obtain jobs as opposed to their illegal counterparts.
a. The two "magnets" which attract illegal aliens are jobs and family connections.
b. Securing U.S. borders, enforce the existing laws, punishing employers who violate the laws, and curbing social services for illegal immigrants must be prioritized.
c. Every developed country now has immigration laws. Without them, sovereignty and national identity are both weakened, security is lost, and a perpetual string of problems occur as a result.

2. Illegal immigrants are taking jobs away from legal citizens.

3. Most people don’t know it, but illegal immigrants are actually thriving off American citizen social security numbers and the IRS and other federal organizations know all about it. To cure ID theft, illegal immigrants must be controlled.
a. As victim Melody Millet is fond of saying, U.S. citizens are being forced to share their identities with undocumented immigrants to give corporate America a steady supply of cheap labor.
b. Thousands, perhaps hundreds of thousands of Americans are right now sharing their identities with immigrants and don't know it. It is the dirty little secret of the immigration issue: By not dealing directly with the undocumented worker situation, the U.S government is actually encouraging identity theft.

Your brief is outlined well, but I was hoping you would have a few more reasons. This paper is supposed to be longer than the others, which in turn suggests more supporting reasons.

My disagreements:
1. In your 'Audience' section you say that they are using our tax dollars for their crimes. All immigrants are not criminals.

2. Illegal immigrants are not stealing jobs from citizens, they are taking the jobs that citizens are unwilling to do. This also increases the pay rates of the citizens' jobs.

3. Allowing in immigrants does not have to lead to a "perpetual string of problems". It could actually help the country.

4. Not every immigrant is stealing an identity from a citizen. Also, arent there many non-immigrants who are guilty of identity theft?

5. The "cheap labor" that you refer to is what keeps your every day prices down. If these employers had to hire American citizens, who demand higher salaries, every person in America would have to spend more money to live day to day.

Jason: You outlined your points of disagreement well, but make sure you have research to back up your perspective. This will be a tough issue to mediate. As I have mentioned to other groups, this is one of the most common topics, so I'm looking forward to seeing how each pair attempts to resolve this issue.
